THE RIDE: Four-door, five-passenger 2005 Audi A6 3.2
DOWN THE ROAD: Now, this is class. The midsize luxury segment is richer with this completely redesigned German sedan. The next generation A6 gets a wheelbase of more than 3.2 inches as well as more horsepower. The vehicle, painted canyon red pearl, a new color for 2005, rode down the road with remarkable agility and responsiveness. The sophisticated ride is even more of a pleasure knowing that endless luxury and comfort features surround you in the cabin.
TECH AND PERFORMANCE: The four-wheel-drive A6 is available in two trim levels: 3.2-liter V-6 engine offering 255 hp at 244 pounds-feet of torque or 4.2-liter V-8 engine with 335 hp at 311 pounds-feet of torque.
Available in a six-speed manu-matic, the sedan is unique in one aspect: delivering fuel directly into the combustion chamber instead of an intake port like most engines in North America. As a result, the vehicle uses fuel more efficiently and wisely.
Driving is more fun and safe with Audi’s trademark Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which rushes power to both front and rear axles. The four-link front suspension and trapezoid-link rear suspension translate into a smooth ride for the sedan. All in all, the well-built sedan handles and steers beautifully.
LOOK AND FEEL: The single-frame radiator grille stands out in the front fascia with low-slung windows and a coupe-like roofline. The elegant and classy A6 is the first Audi to be equipped with bi-xenon adaptive headlights that assist the driver to see around corners. This makes the task of detecting obstacles at sharp bends and turns quite effortless.
I liked the “coming home and leaving home” feature, which lights up the car’s exterior under the rearview mirrors, providing a clean view of the surroundings when you switch off the car. The interior design is attractive and luxurious with center control and instrument are in close reach.
Aluminum inlays for the dash, console and doors give the roomy cabin an elegant and sophisticated appearance. The four-spoke steering wheel, with four Audi rings on the airbag cap, is eyecatching. The Multi Media Interface (MMI) allows the driver to change audio, climate and navigation controls with a knob.
SAFETY FIRST: The engineers at the German carmaker have equipped the A6 with driver- and front-passenger airbags and side airbags, side curtain, front- and rear- three-point safety belts with pretensioners, and front- and rear-body crumple zones.
BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 225/55R16 all season; wheelbase, 111.9 inches; length, 193.5 inches; weight, 3,957 pounds; fuel capacity, 21.1 gallons, highway 26 mpg, city 19 mpg.
OUT THE DOOR: $40,000, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. The Premium Package will fetch you the glass sunroof, bi-xenon adaptive headlights, Bose premium sound system and wood interior trim.
WHY DIG IT: With sporty performance that is backed by the unique Quattro all-wheel drive, fresh body styling and an opulent interior, the A6 is a fun sedan to drive. It is definitely on the top of my list in the luxury car category.
