Enjoy a smooth ride in spacious Suburban

2007 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD

Published: Sep 5, 2006

THE RIDE: Four-door, up to nine-passenger 2007 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD half-ton LT.

DOWN THE ROAD: The 2007 Suburban shares its redesign with the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon and the Cadillac Escalade. Offering three model trims, the new fully boxed frame in the full-size SUV results in a quiet ride with handling that is exceptionally stable and secure. The premium smooth ride suspension is further boosted by wider front and rear tracks.

TECH & PERFORMANCE: The 5.3-liter V-8 engine pumps out 320 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 340 pounds-feet of torque at 4200 rpm. Mated to a standard 4-speed automatic transmission, the all-wheel-drive Suburban keeps vibration and road noise to a minimum, thanks to a coil-over-shock independent front and a 5-link with coil springs rear suspension. The Active Fuel Management system switches to four cylinders, thereby saving gas on some road conditions. Also, the Suburban is a Flex-fuel vehicle, which means the vehicle can operate on a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gas or just plain gasoline. Bringing the over 5,000-pound vehicle to a stop or slowdown are 13-inch brakes in the front and 13.5-inch brakes in the rear. And with a towing capacity of 8,200 pounds, the Suburban serves the purpose of hauling the boat to the dock.

LOOK & FEEL: The front fascia shows off a hefty Chevy gold bowtie centered in a twin-port horizontal grille, inset with an argent texture mesh. It is surrounded by jewel-like headlights and fog lights. A skip plate enhances the off-road and rugged appearance of this SUV. Step into the cabin, which is decked out in a nice wood trim on the dash and front and rear door panels. The huge center console can hold several of your belongings, including CDs, sunglasses, etc. There is 137.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first-row seat. The second-row seat folds and tumbles so the third-row passengers can slide in with ease.

SAFETY FIRST: Dual front airbags, antilock brakes, StabiliTrak, tire pressure monitoring system and remote keyless entry are standard. It's worth the $350 for the curtain-side airbag and the rear-obstacle detection system for $245.

OUT THE DOOR: $39,665, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. Take the rear-seat DVD system for an extra $1,295 if you are transporting kids around town. Also appealing is the tri-zone automatic air conditioner for $195.

BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 265/70R17; wheelbase, 130 inches; length, 222.4 inches; weight, 5,745 pounds; fuel capacity, 31.5 gallons; highway, 20 mpg; city, 15 mpg.

WHY DIG IT: Give credit where it is due. GM has done a tremendous job with the redesign of its full-size SUVs, including the Suburban. The vehicle is not only appropriate for hauling large cargo but also offers a smooth and assuring ride in a spacious and comfortable cabin.
