THE RIDE: Four-door, seven-passenger 2004 Buick Rendezvous Ultra.
DOWN THE ROAD: This crossover vehicle, though riding on a minivan platform, drives like a car. The ride is comfortable and handling is secure. The Ultra model, new for 2004, debuts with a 3.6-liter V-6. Basically, the idea behind the Rendezvous was to offer a vehicle that blends a luxury sedan, a sport-utility vehicle and a minivan into a stylish and handsome package. One must admit that this GM division has succeeded in its endeavor.
TECH AND PERFORMANCE: The Rendezvous is available as a 3.4-liter V-6 (185 hp) or as a 3.6 V-6 (245 hp) with four-speed automatic transmission. Offered in three trim levels, the crossover vehicle comes with a front-wheel or optional all-wheel drive.
If you want power to pull this vehicle ahead in peak-hour traffic, the 3.6-liter engine will suffice.
The VVT in this engine, which uses fully variable intake and exhaust valve timing, boosts fuel economy. Also, the new GM Versatrak all-wheel-drive system enables the vehicle to keep control if one or both front wheels lose grip.
The system transfers torque not only from front to rear but also from side to side between the rear wheels. And then there are the independent front and rear suspension and rear-gear pressure monotube shocks that give the Ultra precise cornering characteristics and smoothness on roads.
LOOK AND FEEL: The Rendezvous boasts bold styling thanks to a monochromatic exterior with color-keyed grille and jewel-like chrome trim. The interior is roomy and eye-pleasing with leather and suede upholstery, wood-dash accents and a wood-trimmed steering wheel.
There is plenty of space to store your valuables overhead as well as in the front-center console. The third-row seat folds into the floor. The second-row captain’s chairs are comfortable and egress/ingress is easy. The head-up instrumental display is of great assistance if you step on the gas in a rush. The Rendezvous is a nice alternative to a minivan, whether you are transporting children or cargo.
SAFETY FIRST: The all-wheel-drive Rendezvous comes with anti-lock brakes, which is optional in front-wheel drive. Also available is remote keyless entry and dual front and side airbags.
BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 215/70R17 touring tires; wheelbase, 112.2 inches; length, 186.5 inches; weight, 4,250 pounds; fuel capacity, 18 gallons; EPA, 18 city, highway 25.
OUT THE DOOR: $29,370, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. Opt for the Ultra package, which adds such neat features as tire-inflation monitor, rear-parking aid, Driver Information Center and power programmable door locks, among others.
WHY DIG IT: The crossover SUV is an affordable alternative in the midsize segment, which is highly competitive. The ride is refined, especially in the 3.6-liter engine vehicle. The Rendezvous offers a pleasant-looking exterior and interior. And it is far more sturdy and reliable than many other SUVs in case of an emergency because of its lower center of gravity.
