Honda Accord Continues To Be A Hot Seller

Published: Sep 14, 2004

THE RIDE: Four-door, five-passenger 2004 Honda Accord EX.

DOWN THE ROAD:Durability, quality and dependability — all these and more are yours for the asking as you step into this reasonably priced midsize family sedan from Honda. Though redesigned just last year, the Accord continues to be a hot seller. The ride is steady and quiet and smooth while cruising Tampa Bay area streets and highways. The sedan drives effortlessly on bumpy roads or slippery highways as well.

TECH & PERFORMANCE: Two engines are available: the 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder producing 160 hp at 5500 rpm and 161 pounds-feet of torque at 4500 rpm or the 3.0-liter, V6 producing 240 hp at 6250 rpm and 212 pounds-feet of torque at 5000 rpm. Regardless of the model you pick, this seventh-generation Accord boasts energetic acceleration. It is offered as a coupe or sedan in six trim levels. The five-speed manual or automatic shifts gears smoothly and responsively. Thanks to front- and rear-double wishbone suspension, the sedan handles the road with remarkable agility. Navigating sharp turns and corners is a breeze. The fuel economy of the V6, estimated at 21 in the city and 30 on the highway, is commendable.

LOOK & FEEL: The front fascia of the Accord is bold, aggressive and handsome. And the crisp, sharp lines continue along the side of the vehicle all the way to the rear. The leather-trimmed interior looks luxurious and seats are comfortable and cozy. All the controls and gauges are easy to reach and read. Though a sedan, the Accord has a total of eight cupholders, more than enough for a family of four. The front-center console slides forward for use as an armrest, a useful feature. Indeed, the cabin is roomy and quiet even at high speeds. Trunk space is plenty for that weekend rendezvous.

NICE & NIFTY: The navigation system is equipped with new intelligent dual climate control, which combines date, time, latitude, longitude and vehicle direction data with information from a sun sensor to determine the amount of light entering the Accord. The climate-control system adjusts accordingly to maintain right cabin temperature.

SAFETY FIRST: Depending on the model you pick, the Accord offers dual front airbags, side airbags and side curtain bags. Antilock brakes are standard.

BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 205/60R16 all-season tires; wheelbase, 107.9 inches; length, 189.5 inches; weight, 3,059 pounds; fuel capacity, 17.1 gallons; EPA, city 21 mpg, highway, 30 mpg.

OUT THE DOOR: $28,400 for automatic EX V6 with navigation system, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges.

WHY DIG IT: The sedan has been showered with endless accolades and raves by auto enthusiasts and publications. The Accord deserves all the credit for its impressive quality as well as resale value. The 2005 hybrid-power V6 Accord should draw lots of attention when it makes its debut later in the year. Stay tuned.
