BMW 645 Ci Is An Athletic Vehicle

Published: Aug 21, 2004

THE RIDE: Two-door, four-passenger 2004 BMW 645Ci coupe.

DOWN THE ROAD: "Watch your foot on the gas pedal," was the warning I received when the sporty and athletic-looking Beamer was dropped off for me. And the moment I stepped into the vehicle and pressed the gas, I realized that this is a speedster. The 645Ci has returned after 15 years. It's a remarkable comeback for a vehicle that can go 0-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. The coupe attracted hordes of attention while cruising the streets or even when I parked at the neighborhood cinema. And all you top-down fans, a convertible also is available.

TECH AND PERFORMANCE: The 4.4-liter V8 engine boosted by 325 hp and 330 pounds-feet of torque is shared by the 745i. Offered in three transmission formats, the 645Ci delivers an amazing and impressive performance. The ride is smooth and comfortable. Opt for Active Steering, part of a Sport Package, which enables you to keep the car under control on the highway or on twisting roads by varying steering ratio with vehicle speed. The standard ARS reduces body lean at corners if you show a little enthusiasm driving this dream of a car – the ultimate driving machine.

LOOK AND FEEL: A low-slung kidney grille and a sweeping roofline give the 645Ci coupe a handsome and stylish look. The car may project an aggressive look but step inside and you will be in awe of a luxurious cabin. The panoramic glass roof will be a hit with car enthusiasts in the Sunshine State. The innovative iDrive may take time to get used to but once you master the system, you can control the on-board navigation, climate and sound systems. The leather-wrapped steering wheel also holds controls for audio and cellular phone. The Logic7 audio system is simply out of this world: it routes 315 watts of two-channel sound through 13 speakers and a seven-channel playback matrix.

SAFETY FIRST: This rear-wheel-drive vehicle takes good care of you. It offers dual front, side and head airbags as well as anti-lock brakes and optional rear-side airbags.

BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 245/45R-19 all-season run-flat; wheelbase, 109.4 inches; length, 190.2 inches; weight, 3,781 pounds; fuel capacity, 18.5 gallons; EPA, city, 18, highway, 26.

OUT THE DOOR: $69,300, plus several options available, and tax, tag, delivery and destination charges.

WHY DIG IT: Aluminum, steel and advanced synthetics have been mixed to perfection in the making of this fine automobile. The result is one athletic vehicle that can quickly reach top speed. Add elegance, grace and comfort to the mix and the comeback of the 6 Series coupe after 15 years deserves a big loud round of applause.
